What does it mean?
Elemental cost analysis groups costs by functional building elements so that projects or design options can be compared. It helps identify where money is allocated without depending entirely on trade-package boundaries. Comparisons still require aligned scope, area measurement, date, location and specification. An element appearing inexpensive may simply have work allocated elsewhere in the source data.
In practice
If the structure costs 60,000 in a 120 m² building, its elemental rate is 500 per m² of that stated floor area. This is not the same as a rate per square metre of structural surface.
Keep in mind
For a useful comparison, record the currency, pricing date, scope and exclusions alongside the amount. Separate measured quantities from unit prices so you can identify whether a change comes from design or pricing. Use project-specific quotations where available, and distinguish an illustrative allowance from a confirmed cost.
